March 7, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV sophomore Dakota Gonzalez has been named All-Mountain West Honorable Mention, as the league announced their season awards on Monday morning.
It's the first all-conference honor for Gonzalez, who is in her first year as a Lady Rebel after spending her freshman season at Kansas in 2013-14 before transferring and sitting out a year. A guard from Pocatello, Idaho, she is the first transfer to lead UNLV in scoring since RanDee Henry in 2003-04, as she currently holds a 14.0 ppg average, good for seventh place in the league. In MW games, she topped that mark with a 14.8 ppg average that ranks her fourth overall. Gonzalez has been one of the top three-point shooters on the team as well, ranking second among Lady Rebels and nine in the MW with 1.6 three-pointers per game while shooting 30.6% from behind the arc.
Gonzalez has also shinned defensively for UNLV, as she is tied for sixth in MW games with 1.9 steals per game, and also 4.7 rebounds per contest. She has scored in double-figures in 15 straight games and 24 total this season, and has one double-double as well, on the road at Fresno State in the team's league opener. One of her best games of the year came in UNLV's 46-38 win over Utah State on Jan. 20, in which she scored all 19 of her points in the second half.
The Lady Rebels finished the regular season at 16-13 and tied for fifth with a 9-9 record in league play. UNLV, the sixth seed in the 2016 MW Championships, opens against 11th-seeded Air Force in the first round on Monday at 7 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
