April 28, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Three UNLV men's tennis players were named to the 2016 All-Mountain West team as the league announced its annual awards Thursday night.
Jakob Amilon, a junior, became a first year honoree as he sits 18-7 overall, including 13-6 in dual matches at the No. 1 position in the lineup. Earlier in the day, Amilon was also honored by the conference as he was named the Mountain West men's tennis player of the week for the second time this season, posting a 5-0 record in singles and doubles over the weekend to help the Rebels to a 3-0 mark at home.
He was joined on the All-MW team by sophomore Alexandr Cozbinov, who is 20-7 overall and 15-5 in duals at the No. 2 spot. Cozbinov won his first career Davis Cup match this spring, competing for his home country of Moldova in early March.
UNLV also placed one doubles team on the list as Amilon and sophomore Ruben Alberts were selected after going 14-6 on the year and recording a perfect 6-0 in league play at the No. 1 spot.
The honors were decided by voting among the eight head coaches. The 2016 MW Player of the Year was Jaime Barajas from Utah State while the league's coach of the year will be announced next week.
Fourth-seeded UNLV (12-9 overall) will take on fifth-seeded New Mexico Friday at approximately 6 p.m. PT at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Tickets are available at the main entrance of the facility for $5 per day ($3 for students with a valid ID from a MW member institution and for kids 3-12 years old â€" 2-and-under are free) or $15 for an all-session pass.
