TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 25 UNLV men's golf team shot a second-round 15-over-par 303 on Tuesday and is tied for sixth at the 2016 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional, which is being played at Ol' Colony Golf Course (par 72, 7,514 yards).
Georgia leads the 13-team tournament by three shots at 10-under 566 after a second-round-low 6-under 282. South Carolina also shot 6-under during the second round and is in second place at 7-under 569. Kentucky is third at 1-under, Alabama is fourth at even par, and Auburn rounds out the top five at 8-over. UNLV is tied with College of Charleston for sixth at 17-over 593, nine shots behind fifth place.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the six NCAA Regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championship finals, which will be played May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Individually, there is a three-way tie for first at 5-under 139 between Kentucky's Tyler McDaniel, and Georgia teammates Greyson Sigg and Zach Healy. McDaniel was 5-under for the second round (tied for the tournament low), while Sigg and Healy were both 1-under. South Carolina's Matthew NeSmith is one shot back in fourth place at 4-under.
The Rebels were led by sophomore John Oda, who is tied for ninth at 1-under 143 after a second-round bogey-free 1-under 71. UNLV senior Zane Thomas is also in the top 20 (tied for 20th) at 2-over 146 after a second-round 2-over 74.
Other UNLV scores: sophomore Shintaro Ban is tied for 44th at 8-over 152 after a second-round 10-over 82, freshman Harry Hall is 59th at 13-over 157 after a second-round 9-over 81 and sophomore Ben Davis is tied for 66th at 16-over 160 after a second-round 5-over 77. There are a total of 75 golfers competing.
This year marks UNLV's 28th straight appearance in a NCAA Regional, which is the record for most consecutive appearances.
