Cortes Named Outstanding Rebel of the Week

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer midfielder Sophie Cortes has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Cortes, a a junior from Newhall, Calif., scored the first two goals of her Rebel career in wins over Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Fullerton at home over the weekend. In Friday's 3-2 victory, Cortes took a pass from Isabella Myers off a free kick in the 31st minute, fought off her defender, and buried the ball into the upper left corner from 22 yards out -- giving UNLV a lead it never relinquished. In Sunday's match, the Rebels and Titans played 101 scoreless minutes before Cortes drew a foul in the box and connected on the ensuing penalty kick to secure the double-overtime win. After her performance, Cortes was named an Honorable Mention selection to TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Team of the Week.

The Rebels open Mountain West Conference play at home on Fri., Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. against San Jose State and wrap up the weekend taking on Fresno State on Sun., Sept. 25 at 12 p.m.
