LIHUE, Hawaii (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 21 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 6-under-par 282 on Wednesday at the 41st Annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which is being played at Kauai's Wailua Golf Course (par 72, 6,991 yards).
No. 9 Virginia is the team leader after a 20-under 268 and leads No. 25 Texas A&M, which is in second place, by eight shots. UNLV follows in third, while BYU is fourth at 4-under and Santa Clara rounds out the top five at 1-under. There are 18 teams competing.
Individually, Virginia's Jimmy Stanger leads the field by four shots after a course-record 10-under 62. Cavaliers teammate Derek Bard and Arizona's Jordan Gumberg are both tied for second at 6-under, while there is a two-way tie for fourth at 5-under.
The Rebels were led individually by juniors Shintaro Ban and John Oda, and sophomore Harry Hall. Ban is tied for sixth at 4-under 68, Oda is tied for 10th at 2-under 70 and Hall is tied for 14th at 1-under 71. Ban had five birdies and a bogey during the first round, Oda had four birdies and two bogeys, and Hall an eagle, two birdies and three bogeys.
Other Rebels: freshman Justin Kim and senior Taylor Montgomery are both tied for 40th at 1-over 73.
There are a total of 109 golfers competing.
