LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golf freshman Justin Kim fired a 4-under-par 68 during the final round of the Jackrabbit Invitational on Saturday and won the first individual title of his collegiate career by a shot.
Kim finished the two-day, 54-hole event held at Las Vegas' Siena Golf Club (par 72, 6,843 yards) at 13-under 203. His final round consisted of five birdies, including the tournament clincher on 18, and one bogey.
Kim's win marked the third individual title for a Rebel golfer this year. The other two were turned in by junior John Oda.
The Rebels, ranked No. 17 in the country as a team, finished the event in second place at 34-under 830 after a final-round-low 12-under 276. Nevada, Reno captured the team title at 41-under after a final-round 8-under.
Cal State Fullerton was third at 27-under, while Long Beach State and South Dakota both tied for fourth at 11-under. There were a total of 12 teams competing at the event hosted by South Dakota State.
Individually after Kim, there was a three-way tie for second at 12-under.
Five UNLV golfers in total finished in the top 20: junior John Oda tied for sixth at 9-under 207 after a final-round 4-under 68, sophomore Harry Hall finished 10th after a final-round 2-under 70, freshman Derek Castillo (competing as an individual) finished tied for 11th at 5-under 211 after a final-round 1-over 73 and junior Shintaro Ban tied for 18th at 2-under 214 after a final-round 1-under 71. Senior Taylor Montgomery tied for 27th at even-par 216 after a final-round 2-under 70.
The tournament had a total of 67 individuals.
UNLV has now played in a total of eight tournaments this season and has recorded a first, three seconds and a third-place finish.
The Rebels will be back in action March 18-19 at the Thunderbird in Tempe, Ariz.
