LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV freshman Izumi Asano wasted little time Friday in moving into the quarterfinals on first day of the 16th annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The freshman from Japan started the morning by topping Katie Kubics of Florida. 6-4, 6-3, and later needed less than an hour to upset 124th-ranked Chloe Ouellet-Pizer of North Carolina, 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 16.

Asano will now face No. 119 Jada Hart of UCLA as part of Saturday's main draw action. The hosts also picked up a top-flight first round win when Anna Bogoslavets downed Marta Perez of Texas before she fell to the event's top seed later in the day.

In the second flight, a trio of Rebels all won their opening matches: Jovana Kenic, 6-4, 6-1 over North Carolina's Anna Harmon; Mercedes Lopez, 6-0, 7-5 over Paulette Wolak of Stanford; and Juliet Zhang, 6-1, 6-0 over Liz Yao of Stanford.

The hosts also picked up a doubles victory in the top flight when Aiwen Zhu teamed with En-Pei Huang to down the Cardinal duo of Wolak and Naomie Rosenberg 6-2.

Individual competitors representing teams that include seven of the top 20 from the season's initial ITA national rankings are on hand for the event, which runs through Sunday.

Action gets underway Saturday with doubles at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
