LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – New UNLV men's tennis player Olle Thestrup is still alive in the top flight of singles after Friday's first day of action at the annual Larry Easley Memorial Classic being played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
 
Players from five other programs are competing in the individual event: UCLA, SMU, Arizona State, Loyola Marymount and Mesa Community College.
 
Thestrup, a transfer from Auburn, downed UCLA's Bryce Pereira, 7-6, 6-2, in the first round and then got by LMU's Lucas Moreno, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to move into Saturday's semifinals. Also winning twice for the hosts was Tom Ciszewski, who in Flight Two eased by Blaise Fagan of SMU, 6-0, 6-1, and then downed Lucas Bellamy of UCLA when his opponent retired after splitting sets.
 
The Rebels also have a trio of doubles teams in tomorrow's quarterfinals. Action resumes Saturday starting with doubles play at 9 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
 
The annual event was renamed in 2010 in honor of UNLV Hall of Famer Larry Easley, who passed away from illness in 2005 at the age of 57. Easley coached the UNLV men's tennis team longer than anyone in history and produced sometimes-spectacular results over his dozen seasons from 1993-2002, including producing five All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions.
