LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -Â UNLV women's swimming freshman Julia Filippova has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Filippova, a freshman from Moscow, Russia, won six of seven events against Utah and BYU in Las Vegas over the weekend.
The freshman won the 100 free events against both the Utes and the Cougars with a time of 50:53 and 50.54, respectively, with both times coming within one tenth of her season-best time, which leads the Mountain West. Her first-place time of 1:48.88 in the 200 meter freestyle against Utah, she swam the third-fastest time in the event in the Mountain West this season and also holds the top time in that category. Filippova also took first in the 500 free event against BYU with a time of 5:00.14 to round out her individual races.
In the relay events, Filippova helped the Rebels take first over Utah in the 200 freestyle relay, leading off with a time of 23.59, then did the same for the 400 freestyle relay against BYU, clocking in at 50.74 as the first leg. Filippova and the Rebels currently hold the fastest 200 freestyle relay time in the Mountain West this season, while their 400 time against the Cougars gave them the top time in the conference in the event this season as well.
Next up for Rebels is the UNLV Invite, set to take place November 29 - December 1 in Las Vegas.
