SANTA CLARA, California (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball couldn't get its offense going in the series opener against San Jose State, falling to the Spartans 4-1 Thursday afternoon in Santa Clara, California. The Rebels dropped their third straight Mountain West contest to move to 20-11 overall and 3-4 in league play, while MW-leading SJSU improved to 22-10 and 6-1 in the conference.
Senior
Janine Petmecky allowed all four of the Spartans' runs to suffer just her fourth loss of the season. She has been defeated in her last two starts, but the Rebel offense has only managed one run in those starts.
A sixth-inning RBI single by freshman
Mia Trejo helped the Rebels avoid a second straight shutout. Trejo provided most of the offense for UNLV as she went 3-for-3 with the one RBI on the day. The RBI also ended a streak of 18.2 innings without scoring a run by the Rebel offense, who will look to get back on track in game two Friday.
THE TURNING POINT: Trailing 1-0 going into the fifth, the Rebels were still within striking distance. Petmecky, who had been nailed in the chest by a line drive early in the game, had pitched solidly, but the Spartans got to her in the bottom of the fifth. In all, SJSU scored three runs on five hits in the inning to take control of the game.
STAT OF THE GAME: Trejo recorded hits in all three at bats and was responsible for driving in the lone run of the game for UNLV.
QUOTABLE:Head coach Kristie Fox - "We need to find a way to give our pitchers some run support offensively. We are in all these games and we just need to find a way."
