San Jose State 8 UNLV 2 |@UNLVSoftball

SANTA CLARA, California (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball suffered its first sweep in Mountain West play with an 8-2 defeat to league-leading San Jose State. With the loss, the Rebels fell to 20-13 overall and 3-6 in the conference, while the Spartans improved to 24-10 and 8-1 in the MW. UNLV has now lost five straight - its longest losing skid of the season.

The Rebels' start to the game was promising as UNLV scored two runs in the first inning - their first runs in the opening frame since game two against Utah State last weekend at home. That would be all they would get, however, as the UNLV offense was held scoreless the remainder of the game while the Spartans plated five runs in second and three in the fourth.

Janine Petmecky was the starter in the circle and lost her third straight to move to 12-5 on year. After a clean first, the senior was responsible for all five runs that were scored in the second. Sophomore Breana Burke entered in relief for the second straight game and gave up the three runs in the fourth before giving way to fellow sophomore Charlie Masterson, who finished off the game with 2.1 scoreless frames.

THE TURNING POINT: After the Rebels took their first lead of the series in the first inning, the Spartans responded in the bottom of the second. The scoring started with a leadoff home run, which was followed by a double, a single and another double to score two more. A walk and another double scored two more SJSU runs and the Spartans were in control at 5-2 by the end of the inning. The defending MW champions added three in the fourth to put the game away.

STAT OF THE GAME: Trejo went 2-for-3, accounting for half of the Rebel hits on the day. For the weekend, the freshman was one of the few to have consistent success, going 5-for-8 (.625) with one RBI and one walk.

QUOTABLE: Head coach Kristie Fox:

"We had some bright spots this weekend, but just couldn't quite put everything together at the same time. Every season has a moment where you question yourself and we have two choices - quit or battle - and from what I've seen from this team we will battle."

REBEL NOTES:
* The loss was the Rebels' fifth straight, marking the longest losing streak of the season
* Petmecky fell to 12-5 on the year
* The Rebels scored in the first inning for the first time since game two against Utah State at home last weekend
* The Rebels have scored five runs in its last 34 innings after scoring 19 in a span of 10, which included back-to-back run rule wins over New Mexico and Utah State

UP NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels will play its lone mid-week game of the season Tuesday, April 3 at San Diego. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
