LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (21-15, 3-8 MW) suffered a 4-1 loss to the San Diego State Aztecs (12-23, 3-5 MW) Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels led 1-0 after four innings of play; however, the Aztecs' offense awoke late in the game and scored twice in the sixth and pushed across two insurance runs in the seventh.
With the game still scoreless through three innings, UNLV finally broke through with a run off an RBI single from Samantha Diaz in the fourth. The Rebels had loaded the bases off singles from Mia Trejo, Brooke Stover and Janine Petmecky to put pressure on the Aztecs. Unfortunately, Diaz's run-scoring hit was sandwiched by a pair of fielder's choice plays that saw a runner thrown out at the plate by SDSU's third baseman.
The Aztecs, who had been limited to three hits through five innings of play by Rebel starter Charlie Masterson (5-6), struck for a pair of runs in the sixth when they strung together four singles. SDSU managed to double its lead in the seventh with help from a lead-off single that was followed by three defensive miscues by UNLV.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Diaz went 1-for-3 in the game with an RBI single.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV's 2-7 hitters had at least one hit in the game and accounted for eight of the team's hits, while Devynn Marshall had the ninth in a pinch-hitting role.
REBEL NOTES:
- With the loss, the Rebels have now lost six straight conference games.
- Masterson took the loss in the circle after throwing a complete game with one strikeout against four runs off of nine hits.
- Trejo and Petmecky had multiple-hit games with two hits apiece.
