LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball closed out its weekend home series on a high note, beating San Diego State 3-2 Sunday at Eller Media Stadium. The win snapped a seven-game Mountain West losing skid as the Rebels moved to 22-15 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
UNLV built a three-run lead over SDSU (12-24, 3-6) over the first three innings, then held off the Aztecs after they closed the gap to one run in the third.
The Rebels used all three of their pitchers to get the job done. Senior
Janine Petmecky got the start and
allowed two runs with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched, then gave way to sophomore
Breana Burke, who went 2.0 scoreless innings with one strikeout. Fellow sophomore
Charlie Masterson entered the game in the seventh and allowed two hits before getting a fly out for the third and final out and her second save of the season.
Petmecky earned every bit of her 14th win of the season as her second inning two-out two-RBI single proved to be the game-winner.
THE TURNING POINT: After the Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the first, Devynn Marshall opened the second inning with a double down the left field line, which was followed by a Justine Federe walk to put two on. Jade Yadao-Valdez then moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Myranda Bueno grounded out for the second out, bringing up Petmecky at the top of the lineup. The senior sent the ball up the middle past a diving SDSU second baseman to score Marshall and Federe for a 3-0 lead.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Petmecky allowed two runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings pitched, but it was her two-out single in the second inning that made the difference in the game.
STAT(S) OF THE GAME: The Rebels were out-hit in the game 11-7, just the sixth time this year they've won the game when that happens. Petmecky, Burke and Masterson forced the Aztecs to leave eight runners stranded.
QUOTABLE: Head coach Kristie Fox
"I think we did a good job of taking care of the ball. Our pitching staff each came in and gave us an opportunity and competed, so it was a really good team win. Petmecky had a big two-out hit that ended up being the game decider. Those are all the things we always talk about - our pitching staff pitching as a team, our defense playing behind them and then getting some key hits with two outs - so when we put all the things we focus on into practice, good things happen. We just keep going back to what we are going to build this program on in the long run and the team is doing a really good job of buying into it and handling the adversity and the ups and downs that happen within a season."
