LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – One of the nation's top individual tournaments returns as players from many of the elite college programs in the United States, including host UNLV, will gather in Las Vegas this weekend for the annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
Individual competitors will be supplied by teams that include half of the top dozen from the season's initial ITA rankings: No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Pepperdine, No. 8 UCLA and No. 11 Florida. Host UNLV is scheduled to provide eight singles players and four doubles teams.
Action begins with doubles each day at 10 a.m. PST on Friday and Saturday with the finals scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free. The event features two flights each of both singles and doubles along with consolation rounds.
Last year's event saw UCLA's 16th-ranked Ena Shibahara down her teammate, 119th-ranked Jada Hart, 6-2, 7-6, for the singles title while that same Bruins' duo, ranked seventh playing together, defeated No. 20 Vladica Babic and Sofia Blanco of Oklahoma State, 6-4, to earn the doubles title.
