Trent Takes Three-Shot Lead At Southern Highlands Collegiate

Rebels tied for sixth as a team, one of seven squads under par at prestigious tournament.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golf sophomore Jack Trent shot a second-round 4-under-par 68 Monday and holds a three-shot individual lead heading into the final round at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate, which is being played at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,374 yards).

For the first time, the event's individual champion will receive an exemption into the PGA Tour's Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Oct. 3-6, at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.

After an opening-round 5-under 67 Sunday, Trent has a 36-hole total of 9-under 135. Stanford's Brandon Wu and Texas' Parker Coody are tied for second at 6-under.

The tournament annually attracts one of the strongest fields in college golf and this year includes five of the nation's top-10 ranked teams.

No. 4 Georgia Tech remains the team leader at 11-under 565 after a second-round 6-under. Stanford is one shot back in second at 10-under, followed by No. 6 Oklahoma at 8-under. No. 22 Texas Tech and No. 8 Texas are tied for fourth at 4-under, while UNLV is tied with No. 9 California for sixth at 2-under. The Rebels shot a second-round 2-under 286 Monday.

STAT OF THE DAY: Only seven of field's 15 teams are under par after the second round.

REBEL OF THE DAY: Trent was 3-under on the day through 10 holes as he birdied Nos. 6, 7 and 10. He bogeyed No. 11, then birdied two more: Nos. 15 and 17. Overall, his second round consisted of five birdies and a bogey.

• Jack Trent earned the Mountain West Freshman of the Year award last season, while Harry Hall and Trent were both recognized as All-MW performers.
• Hall was named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar in July.
• UNLV has played in a NCAA-record 30 straight regionals.
• This year marks head coach Dwaine Knight's 32nd season leading the Rebel program.
