LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – No less than 70 current and former UNLV student-athletes are eligible to take part in Saturday's annual Spring Commencement Ceremonies at the Thomas & Mack Center on campus.
The list includes Rebels who wrapped up their course work this semester as well as those on track to complete their degrees during the summer sessions.
To begin the celebration, the UNLV Athletics Department hosted its annual Senior Send-Off reception for graduates and their families Friday morning at the TMC.
Some graduates, including a number of the 17 football players on the list, have remaining eligibility and will compete for their respective teams again next season while pursuing either a master's or second bachelor's degree. A pair of the football grads – Jocquez Kalili (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Nathan Jacobson (Denver Broncos) – signed contracts with NFL teams in just the past week. Women's tennis graduate Aiwen Zhu, who is a two-time Mountain West Player of the Year – leaves immediately after the ceremony to travel to Florida to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship starting Monday.
Overall, more than 3,000 UNLV undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate in this year's Spring Commencement Ceremonies, which are split into two sessions beginning at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
UNLV President Marta Meana will honor several graduating students during each ceremony for their outstanding academic and community achievements. One of those honored in the afternoon session will be Rebel Girl Ashley Schobert who is graduating from UNLV on Saturday with two majors and two minors: a dual baccalaureate in economics and political science, and minors in Brookings Public Policy and Spanish. Her overall GPA is 3.91.
Overall, this year's UNLV grads range in age from 18 to 71 and hail from 37 states, the District of Columbia and 50 foreign countries. Since 1964, UNLV has awarded more than 140,000 degrees.
