Hamilton Named To USBWA All-District Team

Sophomore guard was one of 10 players honored by the national organization in UNLV's region.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV sophomore guard Bryce Hamilton has been named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association's All-District VIII team, the organization announced Tuesday.

Hamilton, who led the Runnin' Rebels to a second-place finish in the Mountain West this season as the team tallied 12 conference victories for the first time in 12 seasons, was one of 10 players in the region to earn the recognition. District VIII includes the states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.

Hamilton was UNLV's first first-team All-Mountain West honoree since 2013 and averaged a team-high 16.0 points per game for UNLV during the 2019-20 season, playing in all 32 games and starting 14. He shot 45.3 percent from the field and averaged 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per contest. In conference action, he was second in the league in scoring with 20.9 ppg and was second on the team in rebounding at 6.7 rpg, starting 11 of UNLV's 18 league contests. He became the first Runnin' Rebel to average at least 20 ppg in conference play in nine years.

Hamilton scored in double figures in 24 games overall, including each of his last 19 contests, scored a career-high 35 points vs. New Mexico on Jan. 18 and tallied at least 20 points in 10 games (eight of his last 13 contests). He was named the league's Player of the Week on two occasions.

The other District VIII honorees include Utah's Timmy Allen, Idaho's Trevon Allen, BYU's Yoeli Childs, Weber State's Jerrick Harding, UNR's Jalen Harris, Utah States Sam Merrill, Montana's Sayeed Pridgett, New Mexico State's Trevelin Queen and Colorado's McKinley Wright IV. The District VIII Player of the Year was Merrill, while the Coach of the Year was BYU's Mark Pope.

The USBWA is broken down into nine geographic districts and each one had 10 players selected as well as a player and coach of the year. Twenty-four Division I conferences are represented among the 90 players honored. The teams were based on voting from its national membership of 900-plus.

The USBWA will release its 2019-20 All-America team on Monday, March 16, along with the finalists for national player, national freshman and national coach of the year awards.
