LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball junior guard Marvin Coleman has suffered a stress fracture in his right leg and will miss the remainder of the season, head coach T.J. Otzelberger said Saturday.
Coleman, a Las Vegas local, one of two team captains and the starting point guard for the Runnin' Rebels, was the team's assist leader with an average of 4.0 per game. He was also averaging 6.7 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest.
"This is a tough situation for Marvin and is disappointing for our program," Otzelberger said. "He has been an inspiration and extremely coachable. He helped turn our season around last year and as one of our two team captains and a great leader, we were looking to him to help provide that again for our team. We know he will continue to be a passionate Rebel and a great teammate moving forward."
Coleman entered the program as a walk-on, but earned a scholarship following his freshman season (2018-19). As a sophomore in 2019-20, he averaged 6.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Against New Mexico last season, he recorded UNLV's first triple-double in more than 20 years with 11 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists.
In the classroom, Coleman has excelled as well as he twice earned the Mountain West's Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to those with a grade point average of 3.5 or better. He was also selected to the Academic All-MW team. In addition, he is a leader on UNLV's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee serving as its secretary.
