LOS ANGELES (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team played a dual match for the first time since last March on Sunday and it could not have come against a tougher opponent as No. 1-ranked USC defeated the Rebels 4-0 as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Playing a day later than scheduled because of weekend rain at Marks Stadium, the teams started with singles play and the Trojans' powerhouse lineup, which features five ranked players, quickly ended things with four straight-set wins and avoided doubles.
The visitors' top two players, however, were battling in the second set when their matches were halted. At the top spot,
Alex Kobelt trailed No. 1 Daniel Cukierman 6-3, 3-3, and on the second court,
Eric Samuelsson trailed No. 19 Riley Smith 6-2, 5-5.
"Hats off to USC, who were just too good today," said UNLV head coach
Owen Hambrook. "It was great to compete again after 10 long months and we are looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
UNLV will close out the Kickoff event by facing Cal in the consolation round on Monday starting at 10 am PT. USC will face No. 18 UCLA in the championship match later in the day. Live video and scoring is available at
