LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV's contingent turned in an overall mark of 7-2 during Wednesday's first day of competition at the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Women's Championships being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
 
Members from 20 western teams are facing off each day on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles. The host Rebels opened play by winning all three of their doubles matches and seeing second-seeded Izumi Asano and Sasha Aher earn a first-round bye.
 
In singles, UNLV got Flight One victories from fourth-seeded Molly Helgesson, who downed Idaho's Melissa Huchet 6-2, 6-2; 13th-seeded Zita Kovacs, who defeated Dixie State's Sabrina Longson, 6-1, 6-0, and eight-seeded Asano, who rallied past Montana State's Mirte Van Baelen, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In Flight Two, Cindy Hu won her Rebel debut over Dixie State's Alysha Damron, 6-0, 6-2 while Aura Fang enjoyed a bye.
 
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. More 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending ITA National Fall Championships.
 
Thursday will see a second round of doubles and two rounds of singles play, with action starting at 9:00 a.m. PT. The finals are set for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
