LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV duos went a perfect 4-0 in doubles play during Thursday's second day of competition at the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Women's Championships being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
 
Second-seeded Izumi Asano and Sasha Aher downed Montana State's Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Andrea Cuquerella, 8-4; Molly Helgesson and Shir Azran got past Idaho's Jayane Palma and Nicole Horacek, 8-5; Aura Fang and CoCo Zhao upset sixth-seeded Anna Riedmiller and Tatum Burger of Denver, 8-7; and Zita Kovacs and Cindy Hu defeated Weber State's Sicely Ferreira and Megan Davies, 8-2.
 
In singles, UNLV has one player left in Flight One as Helgesson downed Chloe Gavino of New Mexico State, 6-2, 6-2, and then ousted ninth-seeded Joana Baptista of Boise State, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals.
 
In Flight Two, Hu also won twice, sweeping Montana State's JJ Chen, 6-2, 6-2, and then using the same score to down Irayla Mitkova of Montana in the later round. Aura Fang also survived, winning, 6-1, 6-1, over BYU's Avery Pope before ousting Megan Lang-Gould of Idaho State, 6-4, 7-5.
 
Members from 20 western teams are facing off on 12 courts in both singles and doubles. Friday will see two rounds of doubles and another round of singles play, with action starting at 9:00 a.m. PT. The finals are set for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
 
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. More 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending ITA National Fall Championships.
