LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV volleyball fifth-year senior Mariena Hayden was named the Raising Cane's Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Thursday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletics Strategic Communications department.
A native of Belle Plaine, Minnesota, Hayden helped lead the Rebels' run to the Mountain West Championship title match with a quarterfinal victory over New Mexico and an upset of No. 1 seed Colorado State in the semifinals. In a nail-biting, five-set finish vs. the Lobos, the two-time MW Player of the Year posted her seventh double-double of the season with 13 kills and a season-high 16 digs. A day later against the Rams, she recorded her eighth double-double of the year with the fourth-most kills (28) in a single match in MW tournament history to go along with another 16-dig effort.
Hayden once again etched her name in the MW record book with a match-high 14 kills against Boise State in the championship match to become the league's all-time career kills leader (1,935). Behind their tournament run, the Rebels earned a postseason bid for the fourth straight season with an invitation to play in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC), which pits them against New Mexico State Friday at 2 p.m. PT at host Arizona's McKale Memorial Center.
