LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team shot a 15-over 303 as a team in the first round of the Rebel Beach Invitational Monday at Spanish Trail Golf Club. Second round play was suspended due to darkness Monday night and will finish on Tuesday morning beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT. The third and final round will take place immediately after the conclusion of round two.
The best performance of the day came from a new Rebel, freshman
Gracie Olkowski, who is playing as an individual and sat tied for ninth after one round. Fellow freshman
Madeleine Laux had the next best score at 2-over 74 in a tie for 19th, followed by sophomore
Elina Saksa in a tie for 28th at 3-over 75. Junior
Veronica Joels and sophomore
Aliyah Williams, both Las Vegas natives, each shot a 5-over 77 in round one to sit tied for 46th. Senior Luka van der Merwe, playing as an individual, shot a 6-over 78 to sit tied for 54th, while sophomore
Dana Puyol rounded things out in a tie for 67th at 10-over.
Fresno State sat atop the leaderboard heading into round two after shooting a 1-under 287, followed by Gonzaga in second at 4-over 292 and four tied for third - New Mexico, BYU, Grand Canyon and Tulsa - at 7-over 295.
Individually, Fresno State's Harriet Lynch, BYU's Allysha Mae Mateo and Tulsa's Lorena Tseng all shot opening-round 69s to sit tied for first at 3-under, while five different players were tied for fourth behind them at 1-under.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: After UNLV finishes the Rebel Beach Tuesday, the Rebels will head to Seal Beach, California, for Long Beach State's Gold Rush tournament, Monday, February 22 and Tuesday, February 23.
