Rebels Finish Tied For Second At The Gold Rush

Sophomore Elina Saksa takes fifth at 2-over 218

SEAL BEACH, CA (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team concluded Long Beach State's Gold Rush tournament with Tuesday's final round at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, California. The Rebels, who started the day in second, finished in a tie for second after carding a three-round score of 34-over 898.

UNLV had three Rebels finish in the top-12, with sophomore Elina Saksa the highest finisher in fifth place at 2-over 218. Senior Samantha Fuller and freshman Madeleine Laux each shot a 10-over 226 to tie for 12th. Junior Veronica Joels also placed in the top 25 after shooting a 14-over 230 to tie for 23rd. Freshman Gracie Olkowski came in at 53rd with a 30-over 246.

Saksa now has two top-10 finishes to start the 2021 campaign, which included a single-round career low of 67 in round two on Monday. Freshman Laux has been impressive in her first two collegiate tournaments with a pair of top-15 finishes.

USC ran away with the team title, winning by 34 strokes at even 864 for the tournament. Cal Poly tied with UNLV in second, followed by Fresno State one shot behind at 35-over 899 in fourth. Sacramento State and BYU each shot a 56-over 920 to tie for fifth.

Trojan golfers captured the top three spots on the individual leaderboard, with Allisen Corpuz the wire-to-wire winner at 10-under 206. Teammate Alyaa Abdulghany finished four shots behind Corpuz at 6-under 210 to take second, followed by fellow Trjoan Malia Nam in third at even 216. UC Irvine's Sienna Lyford finished one shot ahead of Saksa at 1-over 217 to take fourth.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels will have a couple weeks off before returning to action at Arizona's Wildcat Invite, Monday, March 8 and Tuesday, March 9, in Tucson, Arizona.

NOTES:
• This Rebels have competed in the Gold Rush event three of the last four years
• UNLV have seven returners from last year along with two freshmen newcomers - Madeleine Laux and Gracie Olkowski
• Head coach Amy Bush-Herzer is in her 10th year at the helm of the program. She has led her team to a conference championship four times.
