LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Sophomore Zita Kovacs of host UNLV won both of her singles matches Friday to survive the opening day at the annual Freeman Memorial Championships being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
 
Individual competitors from Pepperdine, UCLA, Stanford, Florida and Oklahoma State are joining the Rebels this weekend for the elite event.
 
Kovacs swept Florida's Alicia Dudeney, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round and then rallied past Stanford's Ana Geller, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, later in the day. She will next face Oklahoma State's 86th-ranked Mananchaya Sawangkaew in Friday's quarterfinal round.
 
Kovacs is also still alive in doubles play as she and partner Molly Helgesson got past UCLA's Sasha Vagramov and Ava Catanzarite, 6-4, in the opening round. The Rebel duo will square off against third-seeded and 38th-ranked Connie Ma and Angelica Blake from Stanford starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
 
Admission to all matches is free of charge.
