LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- Multiple entries from the UNLV women's tennis team are still alive after Friday's first day at the Watanabe Classic, which is being played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.

Joining UNLV in the lineup are competitors from Oregon, Iowa, Utah, Long Beach State and San Diego State.

In the top flight of singles, Super Senior Molly Helgesson took down Mathilde Tranberg of Long Beach State, 6-3, 7-5, to advance.

The Scarlet & Gray took two wins in the third flight with Cindy Hu defeating Peppi Ramstedt of LBSU, 6-2, 6-2, and Salsa Aher downing Lillian Mould of Oregon, 6-4, 6-3.

Coco Zhao enjoyed a bye in flight four.

In doubles play, Helgesson and Zita Kovacs defeated Mayah Petchey and Mould of Oregon, 7-6, in the top flight while Hu and Zhao downed Sarah Medik and Mathidle Tranberg of LBSU, 6-3, while Aher and Fang enoyed a bye in flight two. 

Semifinal action takes place Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. All matches are free of charge.

The annual fall invitational was renamed last year to honor former tennis great Jolene Watanabe, who put the UNLV women's program on the map three decades ago and passed away in 2019 after a battle with cancer at the age of 50.
