TUCSON, ARIZONA (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team completed two rounds at Arizona's prestigious N.I.T. event Friday at Omni Tucson National (par 72 7,200 yards), shooting an 8-over 584 through 36 holes. The short-handed Rebels battled through a last minute scratch of junior
George Leigh, making all four Rebel scores count towards the team total.
Sophomore
Caden Fioroni was UNLV's top performer on the day, shooting rounds of 70 and 73 to sit in a tie for 36th at 1-under. Fellow sophomore
Ben Sawaia carded a 1-over to sit tied for 54th, followed by seniors
J.J. Gresco in a tie for 66th and
David Rauch in a tie for 77th at 3-over and 5-over, respectively.
The strong field at the tournament features seven teams in the top 25, including No. 1 Oklahoma, who won UNLV's Southern Highlands Collegiate at the end of February, and No. 2 Oklahoma State.
Second-ranked Oklahoma State posted a jaw-dropping 41-under through two rounds to lead the field by 21 strokes heading into Saturday's final round. Host Arizona sits in second at 20-under, followed by top-ranked Oklahoma and New Mexico in a tie for third at 18-under. OSU's Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra is on top of the individual leaderboard at 12-under with three - New Mexico's Sam Choi, Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart and Oklahoma State's Aman Gupta - right on his heels at 11-under
