LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's tennis team returned to its winning ways when it opened its weekend of matches with a 7-0 victory over New Mexico State on a breezy Friday morning at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels, who are now 7-0 at home this season, improved to 7-1 overall while the Aggies fell to 0-9.
UNLV won a highly contested doubles point with a 6-4 result at the top position and a 7-5 clincher on court three.
In singles play, the visitors won two of six first sets but the Rebels rallied on both courts to preserve the shutout and mark the program's seventh-straight win over NMSU. One of those players,
Cindy Hu, came back to down Gavi Kalaga, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, at the fourth spot to mark her team-leading 14th singles win of the season vs. four losses. Four other Rebels won in straight sets.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Freshman CoCo Zhao teamed with
Aura Fang to take the clinching doubles match, 7-5, and then cruised past Melissa Cartis on court six, 6-2, 6-0. Zhao improved to 9-2 on the year in singles.
UP NEXT: UNLV is right back on the courts Saturday morning when it hosts Seattle, weather pending, starting with doubles play at 10 a.m. Admission is always free of charge.
