UNLV completed its third straight morning of preseason with a practice at Rebel Park Monday. Wearing shoulder pads for the first time during camp's acclimatization period, the squad worked under a bright sun for the first time in a while as Southern Nevada's monsoon season continues to present itself in area skies.
There was lots of talk in the post-practice media session about how much bigger the team looks than in year's past. That's due to both an effective strength and conditioning program instituted by department head Matt Fyle and the addition of more than a few big bodies from the transfer portal.
Also, asked about competition at a certain spot, head coach
Marcus Arroyo told reporters that at this point probably only two positions were settled going into the season -- kicker and center. That's because Groza Award Semifinalist
Daniel Gutierrez returns as the most efficient kicker in school history while center
Leif Fautanu is an honors candidate as a two-year returnee up front.
The team gets its first off-day Tuesday before heading back to Rebel Park Wednesday morning.
Also, congrats to Super Senior long snapper
Rex Goossen, who was announced Monday as one of just 25 players to the official Patrick Mannelly Award Watch List.
