BERKELEY, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) -- The UNLV men's tennis team opened its season on Friday by competing in the Battle in the Bay Qualifier at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of California.
 
UNLV's contingent of six players split its first round of singles action and then two won again later in the day to advance to the quarterfinals. Sixth-seeded 
Maxim Verboven downed homestanding John Kim of Cal, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1; while 
Anton Ornberg advanced by sweeping San Francisco's Luka Kalenic, 6-1, 6-2.
 
In doubles play, Verboven and 
Milos Dabic won 8-1 and 
Aaron Bailey teamed with 
Dusan Rsovac for an 8-4 victory to advance in the main draw.
 
Thirty players from Cal, UC Davis, UNLV, Saint Mary's, San Diego State, San Francisco, UC Santa Cruz and Stanford are seeking to advance in singles and doubles from the qualifier.
 
On Sunday, two singles players and one doubles team will qualify for the Battle in the Bay, which will run Sept. 23-25 at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco.
