ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round one-under-par 287 Saturday to place third at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, which was hosted by New Mexico at the UNM Championship Course (Par 72, 7,546 yards).
Junior
Caden Fioroni, who shot a final-round two-under, led the Rebels with his second-place finish at 10-under 206 for the weekend. He finished within one-stroke of the winner from Denver Carson Griggs (-11) and was followed by New Mexico State's Garrison Smith (-8) in third, the Lobos' Albert Boneta (-7) in fourth, as well as BYU's David Timmins and San Diego State's Youssef Guezzale tied for fifth (-6).
In spite of shooting one-over on the final day, San Diego State held on for the victory with a 16-under 848 for the 54-hole event. Finishing behind the Aztecs and the second-place finisher UNM (-8), the Rebels finished the event with a 6-under 858 to land them ahead of TCU in fourth place (-4) and BYU in fifth place (-3).
UNLV's next highest finishers were juniors
Ben Sawaia and
Yuki Moriyama - who competed as an individual - in a tie for 14th place at two-under 214 through three rounds of play. Wrapping up the Scarlet & Gray scoring, senior
George Leigh tied for 30th (+3), freshman
Inigo Izuzquiza tied for 45th (+6) and sophomore
Aaron Jarvis tied for 58th (+8).
UP NEXT: The Rebels will use the next week to prepare for the Blessings Collegiate Invitational which is being hosted by Arkansas October 3-5 in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Blessings Golf Club.
