LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's basketball team (12-5 overall, 1-4 Mountain West) will head back out on the road to play at Utah State (14-4, 3-2) on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT.

LAST TIME OUT: In its last outing, UNLV suffered a heartbreaking defeat at home to Colorado State in overtime, 82-81. The Runnin' Rebels held a four-point lead with eight seconds left in regulation and another four-point advantage with 35 seconds left in OT. CSU's Isaiah Stevens was the hero as he hit multiple 3-pointers late in each period to give the Rams the victory. EJ Harkless scored 26 of his career-high 33 points after halftime, while Justin Webster added 15 points and Luis Rodriguez contributed 12.

ABOUT THE ROSTER: This season's UNLV squad features six returners, nine newcomers, including six transfers from the Division I level, and a total of 10 upperclassmen. The lone returning starter is 6-foot guard Jordan McCabe, who was a senior last season and returns for his fifth year for 2022-23. Other returners include 6-3 senior guard Justin Webster, 6-10 senior center David Muoka, 6-4 sophomore guard Keshon Gilbert, 6-7 senior forward Victor Iwuakor and 6-3 senior guard Cameron Burist.

The newcomers include 6-10 redshirt sophomore forward Isaiah Cottrell, who is originally from Las Vegas and transferred to UNLV from West Virginia, 6-7 freshman guard Keyshawn Hall from Cleveland, Ohio, 6-3 fifth-year guard EJ Harkless, who transferred from Oklahoma, 5-11 sophomore guard Jackie Johnson III, who transferred from Duquesne, 6-10 junior forward Karl Jones, who transferred from LA Southwest College, 6-6 sophomore guard Shane Nowell, who transferred from Arizona, 6-4 fifth-year guard Elijah Parquet, who transferred from Colorado, 6-6 senior guard Luis Rodriguez, who transferred from Ole Miss and 6-1 junior guard Nick Walters, who transferred from the College of Southern Nevada.

After 17 contests, Harkless leads the team in scoring with 17.3 ppg (2nd in MW) and is contributing 4.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists (10th in MW) and 1.6 steals per game (7th in MW). Rodriguez is second on the team in scoring with 12.7 ppg, while leading the team in both rebounding (5.9 rpg, 9th in MW) and steals (2.3 spg, 2nd in MW, 21st in the country). Gilbert is also averaging double figures in scoring at 12.4 ppg with a team-leading 3.8 apg (7th in MW) and 2.1 spg (3rd in MW, 45th in the country). David Muoka is second on the team in rebounding (5.6 rpg) and leads the squad in blocks with 1.6 bpg (3rd in MW).

ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Utah State had won three straight games before its current stretch of losing two of its last three. The Aggies are coming off of an 85-70 road loss at UNR on Friday night. USU is 8-1 at home this season with its lone loss coming to Weber State in December (75-72). Utah State is led in scoring by Steven Ashworth (15.6 ppg, 6th in MW) and Taylor Funk (14.1 ppg). Dan Akin leads the team in rebounding (7.3 rpg, 5th in MW), while Max Shulga (4.4 apg, 4th in MW) leads in assists. The Aggies lead the conference in 3-point field-goal percentage (.426, 1st in the nation) and are second in scoring (81.2 ppg, 24th in the nation) and assists (17.3 apg, 16th in the nation). Last season, USU was 18-16 overall and finished seventh in the MW with an 8-10 league mark. The Aggies lost at home in the first round of the NIT to Oregon to end their season. This season's team was picked to finish eighth out of 11 in the MW's preseason poll. Utah State's 15-man roster includes 11 upperclassmen. The Aggies are coached by Ryan Odom who is in his second season at the school with a record of 32-20 (.615) and is in his ninth year as a collegiate head coach with a career mark of 158-101 (.610).
