WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – Junior
Ben Sawaia led the UNLV men's golf team Monday in the first round of the Southwestern Invitational, which is being hosted by No. 14 Pepperdine at North Ranch Country Club (Par 72 - 7,017 yards).
Sawaia, a Henderson native, shot a 1-over 73 to end the day tied for 26th. The tournament's individual leader through the first 18 holes is Texas' Jacob Sosa at 11-under 61 for a four-shot lead over Arizona State's Luke Potter (7) in second.
In a stacked field that features four teams ranked inside the top 25, No. 20 Texas finds itself ahead of the pack in first at 18-under. Following just five shots back is No. 4 ASU in second (-13), while Oregon (-4) is in third and No. 19 San Diego State (E) and Georgia (E) sit tied for fourth. As a team, the Rebels head into the second round in 10th at 9-over.
Joining Sawaia as part of the Scarlet & Gray's trio among the top-40 individual leaders, freshman
Inigo Izuzquiza is tied for 33rd at 3-over and sophomore
Aaron Jarvis and junior
Caden Fioroni are tied for 40th at 3-over. Senior
Yuki Moriyama (+6) rounds out the list of Rebel competitors in a tie for 59th.
