LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf program has received a signed commitment from Maria Jose Martinez to join the Rebels for the 2023-24 season, head coach
Amy Bush-Herzer announced Wednesday.
"We're so excited about Maria joining our Rebel family," said Bush-Herzer. "Maria is a proven winner and brings a wealth of tournament experience to the team. We're thrilled to welcome her to Las Vegas."
A native of Alvarado, Mexico, Martinez makes her way to Las Vegas as a graduate transfer from the University of Houston, where she played four seasons. A two-time All-American Athletic Conference honoree, she holds a career scoring average of 74.29, a career-low round of 66 and Cougar school records with a 54-hole score of 14-under 202 and 36-hole score of 133.
During her time with the Cougars, Martinez helped the squad capture the conference title at The American Championships in 2019 and earned an individual tournament victory at the Lone Star Invitational in 2021 behind her two program-best scores. Additionally, she placed inside the top 10 twice at the AAC Championships, including a sixth-place finish as a true freshman to contribute to Houston's team win and a seventh-place finish as a senior in 2021-22.
As a sophomore in 2019-20, Martinez posted a career-best scoring average of 73.00 to rank second on the team.
Prior to playing collegiate golf, Martinez was a standout youth golfer in Mexico and in Texas. She competed in three Mexican Olympics, earning two gold medals and one bronze, and claimed four Texas Junior Golf individual titles in 2016-17. She also captured the gold medal at the 2013 National Olympiad for ages 12-13.
