INDIO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV men's golf senior
Ben Sawaia stormed to a first-round lead with a 10-under 62 and never looked back on his way to winning the Coachella Amateur at Terra Lago Golf Club.
A Henderson native out of Coronado High School, Sawaia set a Troon Saguaro Amateur Series event record and Terra Lago's North Course record with his first-round score. With his brother and Rebel teammate
Brett Sawaia as his caddy, the elder Sawaia posted a final 54-hole score of 16-under 200 (62-70-68) for a four-shot advantage over runner-up Baylor Larrabee.
UP NEXT: Sawaia and the Rebels return to collegiate action for the spring season-opening Southwestern Invitational from Jan. 29-31.
