Santana Breaks Shot Put Program Record... Again

With a mark of 17.93m, Rosa Santana shatters her own program record and the national record for the Dominican Republic.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) – Sophomore Rosa Santana broke her own program record in the women's shot put, set January 28 at the UNM Team Open (17.53m), with a mark of 17.93m (58-10.0) to close out the Don Kirby Elite Invitational. 

The two-day meet was contested at the Albuquerque Convention Center and the Scarlet & Gray competed against every Mountain West team, with the exception of Hawai'i, as well as Pac-12's Arizona, Cal, UCLA, Oregon and Washington State and a handful of other teams from the ACC, SEC and the Big Ten.

ON THE TRACK
Sophomore distance standout Natalia Ruiz placed fourth in the women's mile with a time of 5:00.86. Senior LaKyla Yazzie finished with a time of 5:17.88, earning her a spot in the top 20. 

Junior Taylor Shorter finished 15th in the women's 60m hurdles qualifying event with a personal best time of 8.79. Freshmen Ella Hagman and Noelani Mendoza also had personal best times in the women's 60m hurdles qualifying event with times of 9.20 and 10.06, respectively. 

Sophomore Shakeria Bowra ran a personal best in the women's 60m qualifying event with a time of 7.75, followed by sophomore Aja Melo-Powell with career best time of 7.82 and Hagman with a personal best of 8.06.

Sophomore Aitza Romero ran a personal best in the women's 800m run with a 2:27.49. 

ON THE FIELD
Santana's program record of 17.93m earned her second place in the women's shot put, behind Oregon's Jorinde Van Klinken who finished with a mark of 19.57m. The sophomore has secured a spot in the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, as well as the Dominican Republic national record. 

NEXT TIME OUT: The Rebels will close out the regular season with a trip to Flagstaff, AZ for the NAU Tune Up Friday, February 17.
