LIHUE, Hawaii (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV men's golf shot 16-under across the second and third rounds to end play at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawai'i at Ocean Course at Hokuala (Par 72 - 7,156 yards). With heavy rain projected in the weekend forecast, all teams concluded tournament play Friday evening after Saturday's final round was moved up a day earlier.
The Rebels, who shot a 6-under in the second round, dipped below their previous round score to record a final-round 10-under to tie with Washington for 15th-place at 8-under 856. BYU won with the event's 54-hole record of 54-under 810, topping runner-up Arizona (-36) in second, Texas A&M (-32) in third, Cal (-27) in fourth and San Diego State (-24) in fifth.
Behind the Scarlet & Gray drops in scores was a trio of individuals under par. That group included junior
Ben Sawaia (-5) with a team-best, tied-for-26th finish, senior
Yuki Moriyama (-4) tied for 33rd and junior
Caden Fioroni - who carded a 2022-23 season-low 8-under 64 on the final 18 - tied for 45th (-2).
Co-champions Sam Bennett from Texas A&M and Sampson Zheng from Cal each finished at 18-under to take a share of the individual title after darkness and weather interrupted a chance for a playoff. BYU's Carson Lindell (-17) and Long Beach State's Ian Gilligan (-17) tied for third, while Lindell's Cougar teammate Keanu Akina took fifth (-14).
Also finishing on the Rebel scorecard, senior
George Leigh (+8) placed 108th and freshman
Brett Sawaia (+9) tied for 109th in his collegiate debut. The latter matched scores with his Scarlet & Gray freshman counterpart
Inigo Izuzquiza (+9), who competed as an individual.
