LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's tennis team fought off former conference-rival Pacific, 5-2, on a sunny Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 2-0 while the Tigers fell to 1-1 on the young season. Both teams used to be members of the Big West Conference until the mid-1990s.
UNLV grabbed a 1-0 lead by taking both completed doubles matches by the same score of 6-4.
Coco Zhao and
Cindy Hu won at the second spot while
Salsa Aher and
Nina Zdravkovic won at No. 3.
In singles play, the visitors got a pair of straight-set victories but the Rebels won four themselves.
Molly Helgesson downed Klara Kosan, 6-2, 7-5, at the top position;
Zita Kovacs downed Tomi Main, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2; Aher swept MiaAngelina Ruja, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3; and
Aura Fang used to a super-tiebreaker to outlast Danielle Zamora, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) on court six.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will close out its opening weekend with a match vs. Youngstown State starting with doubles play at 9 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
