Caden Fioroni shot a 1-under 71 in the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Las Vegas Regional Monday at Bear's Best (Par 72, 7,217 yards). The regional competition is being hosted by UNLV and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Fioroni, whose day was highlighted by an eagle on the 12th hole, notched his fourth straight round of under-par scoring. He heads into the second round looking to move up from his tied-for-42nd position.
The region's top-seed in No. 4 Arizona State jumped out to a day-one lead at 26-under, ahead of second-place Stanford (-20) by six shots. Behind them on the top-5 team leaderboard are Virginia (-19) in third, East Tennessee State (-16) in fourth and UNC Greensboro (-12), Oklahoma State (-12) and Davidson (-12) in a tie for fifth.
ASU's Preston Summerhays leads the individual field at 10-under 62 for a one-shot lead over the Cardinal's Michael Thorbjornsen (-9) in second and two-shot advantage. They are followed by their teammates in Stanford's Ethan Ng (-8) and the Sun Devils' Jose Luis Ballester (-8) in a tie for third.
The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams from the regional event will advance to the 2023 NCAA Championship. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 26-31 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, with ASU and The Thunderbirds serving as hosts.
