LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV men's golf junior
Caden Fioroni wrapped up the second round of the NCAA Men's Golf Las Vegas Regional at Bear's Best (Par 72, 7,217 yards) on a Tuesday that saw play suspended for almost three hours due to lightning. The regional competition is being hosted by UNLV and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Fioroni, who sits at 1-over 145 through 36 holes, finished the day on a positive note with a birdie on the 18th hole. The San Diego native will look to improve upon his tied-for-68th spot in the standings in the final round.
The region's No. 2 seed Stanford used a 22-under round to grab the lead at 42-under 534 and a four-shot advantage over top-seeded Arizona State (-38) in second place. The top-5 teams in contention for a spot in the NCAA Championship going into the final 18 holes are Virginia (-33) in third, San Francisco (-31) in fourth and Northwestern (-30) in fifth. Standing in a tie atop the individual leaderboard, the Cardinal's Ethan Ng (-14) and USF's Matthew Anderson (-14) hold a one-shot lead over Virginia's Ben James (-13) and Ng's Stanford teammate Michael Thorbjornsen (-13).
The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams from the regional event will advance to the 2023 NCAA Championship. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 26-31 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, with ASU and The Thunderbirds serving as hosts.
