ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's golf team is in fifth place after completing the first 36 holes Monday at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, which is being hosted by New Mexico at UNM Championship Course (par 72, 7,546 yards).
Seniors
Yuki Moriyama (69-71) and
Caden Fioroni (69-71) led the Rebels in a tie for 12th at 4-under after posting identical scores in the first and second rounds. Their scorecards position them within five shots of the lead going into the final round.
Behind the senior duo in the Scarlet & Gray lineup, sophomore
Brett Sawaia (-1) started his season debut with a 4-under 68 in the first round before ending the day tied for 26th, while sophomore
Inigo Izuzquiza (+1) and junior
Trevor Lewis (+5) are tied for 42nd and 71st, respectively. Playing as an individual, freshman
Hogan Park (+3) opened the event in a tie for 56th.
Taking the individual lead, Texas Tech's Tyran Snyders tallied a 9-under for a two shot lead over the next closest competitors. In a four-way tie for second, San Francisco's Jakob Melin, TCU's Gustav Frimodt, San Diego State's Shea Lague and UNM's Albert Boneta each shot a 7-under.
Atop the team leaderboard, the Red Raiders' 18-under in the opening rounds gave them a two-shot lead as well over the host Lobos (-16) in second. The Rebels (-9), who combined to shoot a 10-under in the first round, head into the finale within nine shots of the leader.
UP NEXT: The tournament's final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday. Tee times begin at 6:45 a.m. PT.
