SCOTTSDALE, Ariz, (UNLVRebels.com) – Senior
Caden Fioroni leads the UNLV men's golf team in a tie for fourth after the opening round of the Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club.
Fioroni finished with a first-round 6-under 65 to sit just three shots off the lead in a six-way tie. He birdied five holes on the day and eagled on the 17th.
Joining Fioroni in dipping below par for the Scarlet & Gray, sophomore
Wyatt Plattner shot a 1-under 70 in his UNLV debut and is tied for 32nd. Also making their Rebel debuts, freshman
Hogan Park is tied for 53rd (+1) and junior
Trevor Lewis is tied for 58th (+2). Rounding out the lineup, senior
Yuki Moriyama finds himself alongside Lewis in a tie for 58th.
San Diego State's Justin Hastings is the individual leader at 9-under 62, followed by Auburn's Ryan Eshleman (-8) in second and host Georgia State's Daniel Medellin in third (-7).
In the team standings, Auburn jumped to the first-day lead at 24-under through the first 18. Behind the Tigers are SDSU (-21), in second, SMU (-18) in third, Fresno State (-11) in fourth and Oregon (-10) in fifth. As a team, the Rebels combined to shoot a 4-under and opened the event just shy of a tie for eighth.
Competing in the event's individual competition, sophomore
Inigo Izuzquiza (+1) and freshman Philip Kench (+2) stand in the top 25 of players at the Legend Trail course.
