LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Illia Maksymchuk continued his strong autumn play with two more singles wins Wednesday to move into the quarterfinals of the inaugural Mountain West Qualifier being staged this week at the Darling Tennis Center.
Maksymchuk, a sophomore from Ukraine who is seeded fifth, downed Utah State's Roman Venger, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, in the opening round and then returned to get by Lucas Hammond of UNR, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Rebels also picked up a doubles victory as
Dusan Rsovac and
Thomas Navarro fought off Dylan Jaen and Taivok Urata of Boise State, 8-7 (4).
In the pilot year of this new championship format, each NCAA Division 1 AQ-eligible conference will host a tournament to designate one singles player and one doubles pair on both the men's and women's side to represent them in the ITA Conference Masters tournament, which is one of four qualifying pathways to this year's NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
