Trevor Lewis and senior
Caden Fioroni combined to shoot a 3-under to lead the UNLV men's golf team lineup in Sunday's first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club (Par 72, 7,510 yards).
Lewis was the Rebels' day-one leader with a 2-under 70 and Fioroni followed him with a 1-under 71 through 18 holes. The former ended the day in a tie for 17th, while the latter walked off his 18th green in a tie for 26th.
The team leaderboard saw Florida jump out to the opening-day lead with a 10-under for a two-shot advantage over last year's tournament champion Illinois (-8) in second place. Behind them in a three-way tie for third are San Diego State, Texas A&M and Pepperdine at 6-under. As a team, UNLV shot a 3-over on the day and seeks to move up from 13th place in the second round.
Missouri's Jack Lundin rose to the top of the individual leaderboard with a first-round 6-under 66, taking a one-shot lead over the Gators' Ian Gilligan (-5), the Illini's Tyler Goecke (-5) and Arizona State's Josele Ballester (-5) in a three-way tie for second.
Also carding a 1-under 70 in the Scarlet & Gray alongside Fioroni was sophomore
Brett Sawaia, who is competing in the tournament as an individual. Rounding out the Rebel starting lineup, senior
Yuki Moriyama's 1-over has him tied for 49th, sophomore
Wyatt Plattner (+5) is tied for 70th and senior
Ben Sawaia (+7) is tied for 81st.
The remaining Rebels who are playing as individuals include
Billy Smith (+3) in a tie for 60th,
Inigo Izuzquiza (+5) tied for 70th, as well as freshmen
Hogan Park (+8) tied for 82nd and
Phillip Kench (+14) in a tie for 84th.
