Lady Rebels Sweep MW Weekly Nods

Senior Desi-Rae Young is MW Player of the Week; Freshman Amarachi Kimpson is Freshman of the Week

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – For the first time this season, the Lady Rebels have swept the Mountain West Freshman and Player of the Week accolades, the conference announced today. Senior Desi-Rae Young has been named MW Player of the Week and freshman Amarachi Kimpson is MW Freshman of the Week after guiding the Lady Rebels to victories over Wyoming in overtime and UNR for the outright MW Regular Season Champion title for the third straight year.

Kimpson, a freshman guard, averaged 10.0 points per game through two games and shot .571 (8-for-14) from the field. The Little Elm native led UNLV with 16 points by shooting 6-for-9 from the field and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line against Wyoming. In the fourth quarter against Wyoming, Kimpson made her way through the paint and threw up a layup that sank and had the Lady Rebels within two, 47-45. With 3:11 left on the clock, UNLV started an eight-point scoring run, which included Kimpson hitting the game-tying bucket to send the game into overtime at 53-all. Against intrastate rival UNR, Kimpson dished out a career-high five assists, had two rebounds and four points.

Young, a senior center, averaged nearly a double-double against the Cowgirls and Wolfpack with 16.0 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game. The Las Vegas native was the second leading scorer in the overtime victory against Wyoming with 15 points and led UNLV over UNR with her 47th career double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Against the Wolf Pack, Young's first basket of the game put her in sole possession of the second all-time leading scorer in Lady Rebel history and she now has 1,908 career points.

The Lady Rebels completed the MW regular season three-peat for the first time in program history and the first time in the MW since Colorado State went for the four-peat from 2014-17. UNLV has won nine straight games and has an 18-0 road MW streak.

This is the fourth weekly nod for Young and the second for Kimpson this season. The Lady Rebels have earned eight MW weekly accolades this season.

UNLV will begin a two-game homestand first hosting Boise State on Wednesday, February 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cox Pavilion.
