Lady Rebels Claim MW Player, Freshman, Sixth Player Of The Year Honors

This is the second time in program history and second time under head coach Lindy La Rocque to receive three best of year awards in the same season

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – After collecting a Mountain West regular season title for the third straight year and first time ever in program history, the UNLV Lady Rebels were honored for their accomplishments by the conference's coaches tying a school-record and earned three MW best of the year honors, the league announced Sunday.

Senior Desi-Rae Young earned her second Player of the Year title and freshman Amarachi Kimpson picked up Freshman and Sixth Player of the Year. This is the first time in program history a Lady Rebel has earned Freshman and Sixth player of the year in the same season and the second time in program history that a Lady Rebel has earned two Player of the Year nods.

In addition to the duo, Kiara Jackson was selected to the MW All-Conference team along with Young and Kimpson was honorable mention. Young also picked up her third consecutive MW All-Defensive team nod and Kimpson earned MW All-Freshman team honors.

The Lady Rebels earned the No. 1 seed in the league tournament for the first time in program history. UNLV went 17-1 in league play and continued its undefeated streak on the road moving to 19-0 over MW foes dating back to the 2021-22 season. This season, the Lady Rebels picked up two huge Power 5 wins over Arizona and Oklahoma and have been in the Associated Press Top-25 and/or USA Today Coaches Top-25 poll six times this season, which is the first time since 1992-93 where UNLV appeared in the AP poll seven times.

Young, a 2024 Lisa Leslie Top-10 finalist, averaged a team-high 18.6 points and 9.0 rebounds and stayed consistent throughout the season in the top two of the Mountain West leading scorers and in the top 50 of the leading scorers in the nation. The Las Vegas native was named Mountain West Player of the Week four times this season including getting the nod after playing in her 100th career Lady Rebel game and draining a career-high 32 points in a road huge victory over the Sooners. Not only did Young's shooting percentage of .567 mark her second in the conference, she remained in the top 50 in the nation and currently sits as high as 25. This marks the fourth straight All-MW nod for Young and her second time being named Player of the Year.

Kimpson, hailing from Little Elm, Texas, had a phenomenal freshman campaign which had her in the top five of multiple different Lady Rebels' leader categories. Off the bench, Kimpson averaged 20.2 minutes which was seventh on the squad and made an immediate and impressive impact on the floor. Not only did she average 8.4 points, for fourth on the team, her .467 field goal percentage was third. Kimpson grabbed the MW Freshman of the Week nod three times this season including after hitting the game-tying bucket against Wyoming to send the contest into overtime and help the Lady Rebels to a 63-60 victory.

Jackson, the nation and conference leader in assist/turnover ratio at 3.21, stepped up big at the point guard position this season having played and started all 29 Lady Rebels' games. She leads the team in assists with 4.7 per game, which ranks second in the conference. The Grand Prairie, Texas native, drained thus far a career-high 11.1 points per game. Jackson picked up her first Player of the Week nod after averaging 19.0 points against Northern Arizona and Arizona. Against the Wildcats, she tied her career-high in points with 21.

UNLV will have a first-round bye in the MW Tournament and will face No. 8 Air Force or No. 9 Fresno State on Monday, March 11 at 12 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
