SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – Senior
Ben Sawaia leads the UNLV men's golf team's four individuals at the UC San Diego Invitational after Sunday's opening round at Torrey Pines Golf Course (Par 72, 7,258 yards).
Sawaia shot a 1-over 73 to finish the day in a tie for eighth as three Rebels, who are competing as individuals, stand among the top 25. Following him in that group are San Diego product
Phillip Kench (+2) in a tie for 14th playing in his hometown and sophomore
Brett Sawaia (+3) in a tie for 23rd.
Freshman
Hogan Park (+12) rounds out the Scarlet & Gray's individuals in a tie for 100th.
In a three-way tie atop the team leaderboard, Yale, North Dakota State and Oklahoma Christian each fired a first-round 5-over. Also in a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard, Idaho's Matt McGann, Yale's Robert You and NDSU's Ian Simonich shot matching scores of 2-under 70 to take a one-shot advantage into the second round.
