MARICOPA, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV men's golf senior
Yuki Moriyama finds himself contending for the lead in a three-way tie for first after Monday's opening action in Wyoming's Cowboy Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club (Par 72, 7,546 yards). Due to lightning in the area, the second round of play was suspended until Tuesday.
Moriyama, who shot a personal season-low round of 6-under 66 in the first round, continued to lower his score with a 3-under through the first 13 holes of the second round to sit at 9-under through 31 holes. His start to the tournament, which featured eight birdies and an eagle, gives him a two-shot lead alongside USC's Krando Nishiba and UC Davis' Mark Stevens over seven players in a tie for fourth.
The Rebels are also hovering near the top of the team leaderboard in second place after combining for a day-one 20-under, which included a par-72 course season-low round of 13-under 275 on the first 18 holes. They enter the final day within seven shots of Grand Canyon in first at 27-under.
Leading the squad's best round of the spring to start the tournament, the Scarlet & Gray's entire five-man lineup shot below par in the first round. Contributing to that scorecard were
Caden Fioroni's 3-under 69, senior
Ben Sawaia's and junior
Trevor Lewis' matching 2-under 70 rounds and sophomore
Wyatt Plattner's 1-under 71.
Heading into the final day inside the top 25, Fioroni and Plattner are tied for 24th at 4-under. Rounding out the Rebel lineup, Lewis (-2) sits tied for 34th, while Sawaia (+2) stands in a tie for 71st.
UP NEXT: The tournament will resume Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. with the remainder of the second round and conclude with the final round directly following the end of the second.
