SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – Senior
Caden Fioroni led the UNLV men's golf team in Monday's opening round of San Jose State's Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club (Par 70, 6,486 yards).
Fioroni, who shot a 2-over 72, ended his round in a tie for 31st by making two of his team-best four birdies for the day on the 16th and 18th holes. Rounding out the Rebel lineup, senior
Yuki Moriyama (+4) and junior
Trevor Lewis (+4) each concluded the day in a tie for 50th, senior
Ben Sawaia (+6) and sophomore
Wyatt Plattner (+6) are tied for 70th and sophomore
Brett Sawaia (+9) is tied for 86th.
Arizona jumped to the day-one lead as the only team to shoot below par at 2-under through 18 holes. In a tough first day that saw all but one team finish the round with 4-over-par scores or higher, the Scarlet & Gray (+22) seeks to climb up from 12th place in the team standings heading into Tuesday.
Taking the first-round individual lead, Washington's Taehoon Song's 4-under 66 gave him a one-shot advantage over his Huskies teammate Petr Hruby (-3).
