Trevor Lewis and senior
Caden Fioroni combined to shoot a 3-under to lead the UNLV men's golf team in Monday's opening round of the NCAA Stanford Regional at Stanford Golf Course (Par 70, 6,727 yards).
The Rebel duo sits in the top 25 through 18 holes as Lewis is tied for 19th at 2-under 68 and Fioroni is tied for 23rd at 1-under 69. They each recorded four birdies for the round, while also matching each other with three apiece on their front nine.
As a team, the Scarlet & Gray ended the day in eighth place at 1-over in a stacked regional field that includes four top-25 ranked teams. Also competing for the Rebels are senior
Yuki Moriyama (+2) and freshman
Phillip Kench (+2) in a tie for 44th, as well as sophomore
Brett Sawaia (+4) in a tie for 63rd.
Atop the team leaderboard, Illinois shot a 17-under 263 for a four-shot lead over Florida State (-13). Max Herndeen also gave the Illini the day-one individual lead after shooting a 7-under 63.
The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship being held at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa from May 24-29 in Carlsbad, California.
